The Valley of the Butterflies - lies on the western side of the island, one of the most attractive destinations on the island. During July and August the butterflies come to rest in the valley in order to reproduce. The butterflies are in fact Jersey Tiger Moths and are well camouflaged except in flight when their deep red overwings can be seen. As a result tourists are clapping their hands in order to drive the butterflies to the air, however this disturbance has led to a decline in the numbers of butterflies returning each year. Consequently it is now prohibited to disturb them by hand clapping, whistling etc. It is about a sixty minute walk through the valley with small pools and wooden bridges however it is advisable to wear decent walking shoes. |
