Corfu attractions

Beaches
The island of Corfu has some of the Ionian’s most beautiful beaches. There is great variety of beaches all around the island. Most of them have been turned into resorts proposing many accommodations, restaurants and bars. Some of the beaches have also been awarded by the Blue Flag the European guaranty for being so clean. But also be warned the beaches in Corfu are pebbly, with very small pebbles. There’s also beautiful sea life but some can cause pain, such as jellyfish.

Eating out
The irresistible aroma of Greek food wafts through the streets. A delightfully uncomplicated diet relaying on fresh ingredients and simple seasoning, the recipes will have your taste buds tingling. From dips and olives to meatballs and seafood, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Nightlife
Whether you like it loud and lively or low-key and casual, all these can be found. The stylish should head for the cities and larger resorts where you’ll find plenty of chic bars, clubs and restaurant to chose. The little towns and villages are perfect for a few chilled out drinks under the moonlight.

Shopping
The Greeks are known for their handcrafts. Good buys include lace, jewellery, ceramics, knitwear, rugs, leather goods, local wines and spirits. If you’re looking for more extravagant good then head to Athens.

Sightseeing & Tourist Attractions

Palaio Frourio (Old Fort)
(Located in Corfu Town)
The Palaio Frourio stands prominently atop a rocky island on the east side of Corfu Town. Fortifications were built on this site as early as the 6th century although the most of what is left today is from the Venetian rule during the 14th century and later and much more recently, the English rule during the mid 1800s. The site was initially a peninsula but the Venetians dug a moat to convert it into an island for better security. Corfu wasn’t united with the rest of Greece until 1864, at which time the fortress was closed and much of it was destroyed. The Fortress is open daily and adult admission is 4 euros. Included is a small pamphlet that provides an overview and detailed map of the Fortress.

Sight Seeing on Corfu Train:
A wonderful way to see Corfu’s history is to take the 45-minute trip. The taped message is in a number of languages, including English and the cost is 4 euros. The train leaves the main area of town and heads south along Garitsa Bay. The train also passes Ionian Academy, Corfu’s oldest university as well as Corfu Palace, Corfu’s premier hotel.

Grotto Boat Tour:
A boat excursion from Paleokastritsa beach to explore the coastline. Each boat holds 6 to 8 people and the cost is 8 euros per person for a half an hour trip. Passengers on the boats will be shown small cave’s if the boat is able to go into one or two.
